English / Language Arts Adoption
English / Language Arts Materials Adoption

For over a year the staff has been examining the English/Language Arts materials that have been approved for adoption by the California Department of Education. After extensive review and analysis, the teachers have unanimously recommended that the Pearson Reading Street program be approved for adoption at Ballard School. Pearson Reading Street is a research based kindergarten through sixth grade comprehensive reading program.

The program provides:
• Direct and explicit instruction for each grade level
• Developmental and sequential instruction from year to year
• Differentiated instructional plans for all readers: struggling, grade level, and advanced

The core areas of reading instruction are addressed:
• Phonemic Awareness
• Phonics
• Fluency
• Vocabulary
• Spelling

The program connects reading and writing to improve understanding and is based on the 6 Traits Writing instructional model that is currently used at our school. The use of high quality literature in the texts provides a balance between fiction and non-fiction reading. Students are provided leveled reading materials in the classroom and online reading experiences. The program is also aligned with the California State Science and Social Studies Standards and provides literature from a variety of genres.

We look forward to using these new materials in the 2010/2011 school year!

Please stop by the office if you would like to preview the Pearson Reading Street Materials.

Ballard Shines on the API!
Congratulations Ballard’s students, staff, and parents! Earlier this week the California Department of Education released the 2009 Academic Performance Index results for schools and districts. You may recall that the API is one measure of a school’s success on the California Standards Tests that were administered last spring. The API range is 200 – 1000, with a ‘target’ of 800. Santa Barbara County has 117 schools that received API scores in 2009, and 7 of those schools’ API exceeded 900. Please see the table below.

Santa Barbara County API

Summerland Elem - 968
Cold Spring Elem - 959
Montecito Elem - 941
Ballard Elem - 927
Mountain View Elem - 917
Washington Elem - 912

Ballard School is located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley on the central coast of California in Santa Barbara County. This public school teaches students from kindergarten to 6th grade. In the early days, since the schoolhouse was the only public building in the valley, it was often used for church services, weddings, funerals and the meeting place of the Good Templar Lodge and the Farmer's Alliance. It also has served as the site for lectures, social entertainment, lively debates, singing and Saturday night dances.

If you have a great story to tell about Ballard School or old time photos you would like to share, please email us and we can include it on our website. We want to preserve the history of our fabulous school.
